ROMITORIO DI SANTEDAME
Toscana IGT
GRAPE VARIETIES
60% Colourino and 40% Merlot
TASTING NOTES
Romitorio di Santedame is a rare, intense and complex wine. It is beautifully structured with balanced tannins, acidity, and fresh fruit flavours that lead into a long, velvety finish of strawberries, coffee and hazelnuts.
THE STORY
The Super Tuscan Romitorio di Santedame Toscana IGT is a unique, single-estate wine that is crafted from the rare native Tuscan grape variety Colourino. This ancient and almost forgotten variety takes its name from its deep, dark colour. The Colourino is blended with Merlot to give the wine softness and structure.
This wine romantically takes its name from a 12th century hermitage or romitorio located on Ruffino's Santedame vineyard estate.
FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS
This wine deserves a meal worthy of its richness and complexity. Enjoy it with lamb chops, moussaka or braised duck. It's also wonderful with classics such as duck pâté or beef Wellington.
WINEMAKER'S NOTES
We source grapes from the Romitorio di Santedame vineyard on Ruffino's Santedame Estate located just outside the town of Castellina in Chianti. Only the best grapes, hand selected during the picking process, are used for the production of this wine. Romitorio undergoes malolactic fermentation in 60-gallon French oak casks to impart a velvety texture. The Colourino and Merlot are aged separately in French oak casks for about 18 months. After blending, the wine is further aged for 12 months in the bottle.
